South Africa’s Kevin Anderson is through to the Wimbledon second round thanks to a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 straight sets win over Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene on Monday. Defending champion Andy Murray was also an easy first round winner in London after a 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Belgium’s David Goffin on centre court. Tomas Berdych was also a winner. The Czech sixth seed earned a 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 win over Victor Hanescu.
Russia’s seventeenth seeded Mikhail Youzhny cruised through 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 against Britain’s James Ward. Eighteenth seed Spaniard Fernando Verdasco was the first high-profile casualty at the All England Club when he fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Marinko Matosevic. Latvia’s 12th seed Ernests Gulbis progressed thanks to a 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 win over Jurgen Zopp. Seventh seeded Spaniard David Ferrer was also a winner.
In the ladies’ draw, Australian Open champion Li Na cruised through her first round encounter against Paula Kania. Li stopped the Pole 7-5, 6-2. Eighth seed Victoria Azarenka progressed thanks to a 6-3, 7-5 win over Mirjana Lucic. Eighteenth seed Sloane Stephens was eliminated in the first round by Russia’s Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 7-6.
Earlier, seventeenth seed Samantha Stosur of Australia was dumped out at the All England Club by Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 6-4. Elena Vesnina, seeded 32, won through to the second round after a 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Patricia Mayr-Achleitner. Ekaterina Makarova won through but needed three sets against veteran Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Former champion Venus Williams, seeded 30th in 2014, also progressed.
