World number one Rafael Nadal needed four sets to progress to the second round at Wimbledon on Tuesday thanks to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win over Martin Klizan. Seven-times champion Roger Federer won through to the second round at the All England Club after a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 hammering of Paolo Lorenzi on Tuesday. Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka is also a Wimbledon first round winner. The Swiss saw off Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is also through to the second round after a 6-1, 3-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 battle against Austria’s Jurgen Melzer. Tenth seed Kei Nishikori stopped Kenny De Schepper in three sets but worked hard for his 6-4, 7-6, 7-5 win. There were also wins for Milos Raonic, Richard Gasquet and Jerzy Janowicz.
In the ladies’ singles, Serena Williams swept past fellow American Anna Tatashvilli 6-1, 6-2. Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska won through to the second round. The Pole had the beating of Andreea Mitu 6-2, 6-1 to ease into the next round. Roland Garros champion Maria Sharapova stormed into the second round after a 6-1, 6-0 annihilation of Britain’s Samantha Murray.
However it was a bad day for Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic. The former world number one was dumped out by Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-2. Twentieth seed Andrea Petkovic triumphed 6-1, 6-4 over Katarzyna Piter of Poland. There were also wins for Caroline Wozniacki and Simona Halep.
