Rafael Nadal Wins At Wimbledon As Serena Williams Progresses Too

World number one Rafael Nadal needed a fourth set to see off Lukas Rosol in the Wimbledon second round on Thursday.  Rosol eliminated Nadal in the second round two years ago and the Spaniard might have thought history was going to repeat itself when the Czech won the first set 6-4.  However Nadal stormed back to take the next three 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 to set up a third round tie against Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan.

Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka saw off Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to progress to the third round at SW19.  Top ten gentlemen’s seeds Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori won through to the third round.  Raonic, the eighth seed, was too strong for American Jack Sock 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 while tenth seed Nishikori was also a straight sets victor in seeing off Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

In the ladies’ singles South Africa’s Chani Scheepers was sent crashing out at the All England Club at the hands of world number one Serena Williams.  The American overpowered the Harrismith-born Scheepers 6-1, 6-1 to book a third round berth.  There were also wins for Angelique Kerber and Ana Ivanovic.
