Rafael Nadal is out of the 2014 Wimbledon tournament after he was stunned by unheralded Australian Nick Kyrgios 7-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 on Centre Court on Tuesday. The wildcard Aussie is ranked 144 in the world and will face eighth seed Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals. Roger Federer is into the gentlemen’s singles quarter-finals following a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Spain’s Tommy Robredo on Tuesday. The seven-times All England Club winner will face Stanislas Wawrinka in the last eight. The all-Swiss match up was confirmed after Wawrinka marched into the quarter-finals with a straight sets sweep of Feliciano Lopez 7-6, 7-6, 6-3. Although the Swiss was made to work hard he progressed to the next round to set up a tantalising battle against his countryman.
Third seed Simona Halep is now the outright favourite to win her first Major title after her 6-3, 6-0 Wimbledon fourth round victory over Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan on Tuesday. The Romanian advances to a quarter-final meeting against Germany’s Sabine Lisicki. Hot on Halep’s heels is Germany’s Angelique Kerber who saw off Russia’s Maria Sharapova 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 on centre court to eliminate the fifth seed. Kerber next takes on Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard.
